Girls Excel is a girls-and women-led nonprofit organization working to empower adolescent girls and young women across Cameroon and Africa.
Girls Excel is a social impact organisation that designs sustainable programs that equip adolescent girls and young women with the tools (education, protection, and vocational training) so they can be equipped to address issues affecting their human rights. Girls Excel is committed to fostering dignity, safety, and equal opportunities for adolescent girls and women—especially those living in crisis-affected and underserved communities. We work in close collaboration with different government technical services and INGOs.
We are recruiting a Protection Assistant to support a new protection project targeting women and girls at risk of, or who are survivors of, protection concerns in Kumba. An ideal candidate for this position must be based in or willing to relocate to Kumba.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Protection Assistant will support the implementation of activities around psychosocioal support, community-based protection, Gender Based violence prevention and support as well as menstrual Hygiene management with girls and women in Kumba. The role requires a committed humanitarian professional with strong community engagement skills, understanding of protection principles, and the ability to work in insecure and complex environments. The Protection Assistant will work closely with the Program Coordinator and Admin & Project Assistant to ensure safe, timely, and high-quality implementation of all project activities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct psychosocial support (PSS) sessions for women and children at risk or surviving protection concerns.
Carry out needs assessments within target communities to identify vulnerabilities, protection threats, and contributing factors.
Identify survivors of protection incidents and ensure timely, confidential referrals to available specialized services in line with the Protection Cluster referral pathway.
Support emotional well-being and basic coping strategies through group and individual interventions.
Facilitate girls club activities for adolescent girls and women in Kumba.
Organize awareness and sensitization sessions on protection, GBV, child protection, MHM, and other relevant issues.
Engage community leaders, women’s groups, youth groups, and local authorities to strengthen community-based protection mechanisms.
Participate in stakeholder engagement meetings to promote collaboration and collective action.
Conduct daily activity monitoring and collect disaggregated data using Girls Excel tools.
Support baseline, midline, and endline assessments.
Ensure accountability to affected populations through feedback and complaint mechanisms (help desks, suggestion boxes, anonymous feedback).
Document lessons learned, success stories, and emerging issues for reporting.
Uphold Girls Excel’s Zero Tolerance Policy on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA).
Ensure informed consent, confidentiality, safe data handling, and dignified engagement with beneficiaries.
Report any safeguarding or protection concerns following established protocols.
Ensure that gender, inclusion, and safety considerations are integrated in all activities.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Essential:
Bachelor’s degree in Women and Gender Studies, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Humanitarian Action, or related field.
Minimum 1–2 years of experience working with women and girls in humanitarian settings.
Experience in protection, GBV prevention, child protection, PSS, or community-based programming.
Strong understanding of protection principles, safeguarding, and referral pathways.
Experience working in crisis-affected or hard-to-reach communities.
Prior work experience with another CSO or INGO in a similar capacity.
Training in PSS, GBV, CP, MHM, or facilitation of gender and protection programs.
Familiarity with the Girls Shine and/or GEM Club curriculum is an asset.
Ability to speak English and Pidgin fluently (a MUST). Local languages are an added advantage.

CONTRACT TYPE & WORK CONDITIONS
Duty Station:Â Kumba (with frequent field visits to Kossala and surrounding communities).
Contract Type:Â 3 Months, Project-based
